A Battle : The world’s most vulnerable populations vs the coronavirus

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

While the mainstream media covers the coronavirus pandemic and the spread around the world, they left out the conflict-ridden zones. Currently, the coronavirus pandemic is impacting the public health systems and economies of many countries. However, conflict zones have faced repercussions and suffered the most from the spread. While privileged communities accelerate the spread by refusing to do as they are told, conflict ridden zones struggle to get resources to contain the spread. Pandemic responses struggle to get the resources to the civilians because of political violence, increasing levels of displaced civilians and the lack of leadership.

The UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a global ceasefire in order for help to reach the civilians. However, as the virus spreads globally and the international community is trying to deal with it, some sides in Yemen are taking advantage to reopen battlefronts. Regardless, some relief teams are rushing to respond to the cases in Yemen and other conflict zones. Their aim is to establish quarantine facilities and isolation centers. They also gather resources to improve general living conditions, hygiene and access to health care for the citizens.

On the other side, people are far from understanding that being able to quarantine at home is a privilege. They refuse to wear masks and complain about staying indoors when there are others wishing they could get that comfort. My message to you is, be grateful you can stay at home and get creative with the extra time you have.
